Abstract

ABSTRACT: textitSunglint, also known as the specular reflection of light from water surfaces, is a component of sensor-received radiance that represents a confounding factor on the characterization of water bodies by remote sensing. The present study assessed the textitsunglint effects in airborne hyperspectral images acquired by the SpecTIR sensor at different time and flight directions over the Ibitinga reservoir (Case 2 waters). The Ibitinga reservoir, located in southeastern Brazil (state of São Paulo), was selected as the study area because of its meandering shape. As a result, there is demanding constant changes in data acquisition geometry to achieve complete coverage. Field data collection was carried out on October 23$_rd$ and 24$_th$, 2011. During these two days, 14 water stations along the reservoir were sampled, concurrently with the SpecTIR image acquisition in 357 bands (398-2455 nm) and at 3 m spatial resolution. The optically active substances (OAS) were determined in laboratory. The effects of textitsunglint in the images were corrected using the Goodman et al. (2008) algorithm. The effectiveness of this method was tested through comparison of results with those from the algorithm proposed by Kutser et al. (2009) and from the Kutser modified method. Correlation coefficients were generated between the analytical water quality variables data and the reflectance values of the images. Results showed that the textitsunglint affected not only the visual aspects of images but also their radiometric quality, increasing the reflectance values up to three times more than the expected for water targets. The Goodman et al. (2008) algorithm produced good results, reducing spectral differences between homogeneous masses of waters affected and non-affected by textitsunglint, enabling better visual interpretation of the scenes and improving the quality of the spectral information. The Kutser et al. (2009) method was not able to remove the textitsunglint from the most contaminated areas, while the Kutser modified method was too sensitive to the atmospheric correction procedure and to signal/noise ratio. The solar zenith angle was found to be the most important factor in the occurrence of textitsunglint in the images. Images acquired with larger zenith angles (approximately 40$°$) are less predisposed to the occurrence of these features, while the scenes with zenith angles between 30$°$ and 40$°$ were more contaminated with textitsunglint, especially on the images edges. Although the images with larger zenith angles have been less affected by textitsunglint, the incident radiation was not sufficient to characterize the water OAS through empirical relationships between their concentrations and spectral data. The results clearly showed a data division into two distinct sets, formed by zenith angles above and below 40$°$. The correction of the textitsunglint effects tends to cluster all data in one assembly, allowing an improvement in the relations between the OAS and the reflectance. The choice of the best solar zenith angle for the acquisition of images over aquatic environments represents a trade-off between sensitivity to the textitsunglint occurrence and the signal maximization regarding the OAS presence.
